Your Wood Swing Set Guide

Purchasing high quality wood swing sets makes for a big decision, and there are some fantastic models out there that can accommodate any budget.  Perhaps you have done some reading out on the web and even looked at some other websites, but you cannot figure out where to even get started.  What should you be looking for?

Here is a straightforward simple guide to some of the things you should keep in mind when choosing your new swing sets.  Enjoy!

Determine Your Yard Space

Before you step into any store or start ordering your wood swing sets online, you need to find out how much space you actually have in your yard.  Resist the temptation to squeeze the biggest set you can find into whatever corner it fits into as this can result in putting your children at risk for serious injury.

You want to have 6 feet of space around all sides of the structure, creating a buffer zone between the swings and any other possible obstacles on your property.

Consider Structural Integrity

Structural integrity should be your main concern before you begin looking at other features, and you have already made a giant step by deciding to go with wood specifically.  Other materials may have their appeal, but plastic weakens when exposed to the elements and metal will corrode.

Keep in mind, however, that not every kind of wood is good for this type of structure—white woods, specifically, are extremely susceptible to termites and wood rot.  These woods are also not quite as strong.

Redwood and Cedar, on the other hand, are extremely durable when exposed to the elements—they have a large amount of natural oils in the wood, helping protect it from the weather, and because it is more dense, it stands up better to insects as well.  Redwood and Cedar are also highly desired because of their beautiful natural look.

One more structural integrity concern with wood swing sets is the method in which they are put together.  First off, make double sure all nuts and bolts, if used, are deeply embedded into the wood, leaving no sharp protrusions that can catch clothes or injure children.  Furthermore, realize that even if shiny metal brackets look nice against redwood, they are very likely to rust and corrode over time, creating a hazard in your yard.

Look at the Options

Take some time to consider all the different options you want included in your wood swing sets.  While swings have their appeal and will always have their place in the playground, many children want a little something more.  Some sets come with the typical strap seats, bucket seats for smaller children, and a trapeze swing for the more acrobatic child.  You may want to look at a set that is adjoined with a fort, and at the very least, you probably want to get a set that will be easy to add onto in the future as needs, lifestyle, and budget changes.

Talk With Your Kids

While most parents cannot afford to give their children too much authority in the buying process, it is a good idea to include them (unless you are meaning to surprise them, of course).  Remember that a lesson in economics can do your children a favor, so explain to them that you have a budget and then bring them along to help pick your wood swing sets out.  After all, no one knows what will capture their imaginations like they do!
